AI With Intention: Academic Integrity in the Age of AI

Recent research shows 85% of high school students are using AI tools to complete their schoolwork, yet only 15% of high school students report being taught when and how to use, or not use, AI tools in ways that support their learning. Meanwhile, 95% of teachers are concerned about student cheating, but only 6% of teachers believe their school has a clear and comprehensive policy on AI and academic integrity. Regardless of how educators feel about AI tools, these gaps need to be addressed.

Purpose and Goals: In this workshop, curricular leaders, instructional coaches, teachers, and technology specialists will learn research-based strategies that support academic integrity and minimize cheating in this era of unavoidable AI.

Participants will learn:

  • Important differences between cheating and integrity and practical, research-based strategies that minimize cheating and support academic integrity.
  • Why vague permission to use AI, and blanket bans that prohibit the use of any AI, are equally ineffective.
  • How to establish, and apply, clear guidelines and boundaries to ensure consistent messaging to students about when and how to use, or not use, AI tools in ways that support their learning.
  • How to establish shared expectations for effective, ineffective, and inappropriate uses of AI tools to create clarity for students.
  • How to establish a culture of learning that emphasizes integrity and transparency, and holds students accountable to explain their completed work.
